Born with the name Cassius Clay, Muhammad Ali lived a life unapologetically true to his identity and beliefs. That, along with his success as a three-time heavyweight champion, Olympic Gold winner and a larger-than-life personality, made Ali an inspiration to many around the globe. Most notably, the boxing champ had been seen as a cultural icon for his stance on civil rights and the Vietnam War. On June 20, 1967 Ali was convicted for refusing to report for induction into the armed forces.
