The Federal Reserve has announced that it is keeping interest rates unchanged, a move that could provide a fillip to gold prices and stocks of companies involved in the mining of precious metals. On a day on which the S&P 500 closed around 0.25% lower, the stocks of Newmont Mining, Barrick Gold, Freeport-McMoRan Inc., and Silver Wheaton rose around 2% each.
